The Importance of Special Needs Trusts
Special Needs Trusts are an important part of Estate Planning for clients whose family members have disabilities or chronic illness. A Special Needs Trust (also referred to as a Supplemental Needs Trust) helps beneficiaries receive their inheritance while also following important guidelines regarding what the trust can and cannot pay for; so that the beneficiary with disabilities remains eligible to receive governmental benefits and public assistance. These trusts can be established by a parent or family member, and they can also be set up by a person with disabilities themselves.
